I thought that too until recently, but it's simply not true. In fact, we've been directly imaging exoplanets for over a decade.

Not even close. Voyager 1 and 2 have been traveling for decades and have barely left our solar system.

I see stars in lots of images taken from space. See: Hubble, JWST.
