I'm from northern VA too so I just want to corroborate what you're saying for the other commenters. Every bakery and grocery store has king cakes out the 2 weeks leading up to Mardi Gras.

My high school started at 9:00 am in Virginia. It was the elementary schools in the district that started at 7:40 am.

I am a millennial in a SE MA town and would prefer to deviate from the chains. Good food and/or cozy space and/or community events are a great way to set yourself apart. Host book clubs, mom groups, advertise a TON in the mom Facebook groups and you should have a golden business opportunity I think.

It’s all suburbs around that area really unless you want to consider Providence. Sounds like you’re looking for livelier than a suburb. But Easton, Plainville, Sharon, Mansfield, Foxboro all have tight knit communities with cute little main streets. I think maybe Mansfield and Foxboro would be the liveliest.
