The built-in case screen protectors cause more scratches than they prevent due to abrasive dust slipping between the glass and protector, but the glass adhesive protectors actually hide scratches.

All phones are susceptible to heat since they don't have fans inside. 100 C/212 F is typically the maximum limit for safe internal temperatures, and your phone probably hit it.
Do you really want your premium brand phone burning up its battery and shortening its life? By that point, it had already stopped charging and slowed the processor down to try to lower its temperature, but that wasn't enough.

If your phone has never been around abrasive dust, you're fairly safe. Just know that one small grain of sand or one fleck of metal could ruin your record.
Adhesive protectors also transmit light much better. That's why Apple switched from a replaceable floating glass outer layer to a bonded screen. Major loss for repairability, but it does look so much better.
