First of all, I hate the term "serious gamer." It is, in my opinion, a gatekeeping term used by touchebag, wannabe twitch streamers that mostly play warzone and fortnite.

If you game, you're a gamer, end of story.

Secondly, I personally think the Xbox is pointless. If you're going down the microsoft route, get a PC.

If you just want a console, I would go PS5. It has better exclusives.

Nintendo is a niche console. It isn't as powerful as Xbox, in fact the switch isn't as powerful as an Xbox 360 which is 2 generations back, but it doesn't try to compete. It is good for local multiplayer games so it is more of a party console. Xbox is more for the serious gamer.

On the surface, it can look like a downgrade. However, game developers are trying to get Microsoft to drop the series S. The reason is Microsoft insist that all games that come out on the series X must be compatible with the series S, which is only a little more powerful than a last-generation console.

I would say take the PS4 and the games.

Game developers are trying to get Microsoft to drop the Series S, as it isn't much better than the previous generation and Microsoft insist on all games on the series X is compatible with the series S. Game developers are saying the series S substantially nerf the games they are bringing out.
