That was the golden age. Then the financial crash led to the studios closing or being bought out.

I would say we’re currently in a decent time right now compared to the 2010’s.

Baldurs gate can be really hard for newer gamers to get acclimatized. But the game is a masterpiece from another time and place, if you can deal with the outdated mechanics and ui the story characters and rpg aspects are unmatched.
