It's still bullshit even if they're just passing it through. It's their own cost of doing business, and you can't decline it. It's literally impossible to pay their advertised prices, which should be illegal without question.

Surely only if there was a capital gain, which would be pretty rare outside of vintage cars or a crazy used car market (admittedly, we have had that recently).

In fact, if you sell to a dealer as a trade-in while buying another car, not only would you not pay income tax on it, but you essentially get a tax credit because the sales tax on the new car is based on the after-trade price.

I also had a hell of a time cancelling a Boston Globe subscription. I was so irritated sitting on hold that I vowed to never give them another dime.

So yeah, I don't know what it would take to pass this here, but I'd be in favor. In the meantime, temporarily changing your billing address to somewhere in CA might let you trigger some of these protections.
