Can we get some pictures? My guess is the constant temperature movement weakens the adhesive. If it's an exterior wall. But the scary thing is it could also be covering up something, like water damage.

"And can we do this on a shoestring budget and with no/few chemicals that will affect a pregnant woman? It's right by the bedroom." - it's totally possible, my guess is it is sheetrock behing the wall (if they didn't pick the right glue, they didn't prep this and just HDTV'd it. So you would have to remove all the boards, and then respackle and sand the wall (lots of dust) then paint,,, but like all house projects it could be easy on paper but then turn out hard.

The summer of 2021 I decided to replace my siding on one side of the house, ripped it off and the entire wall was rotting so had to replace that, and the vinyl windows because they were a little weathered and broke as I tried to remove them.. a $1.2k project ended up being $9k by the time I was done.
