Reply to comment by myislanduniverse in ELI5 why do electric vehicles have one big battery that's hard to replace once it's expired, rather than lots of smaller ones that could be swapped out based on need (to trade off range/power/weight)? by ginonofalg
I mean, it's not like the timing chain belt and we throw the car away, things are generally serviceable and if it's a choice of 2k to fix it vs 20k to get a new one, not just cars but things in general, why wouldn't you just fix it? People are way too eager to get a new car when theirs starts fucking up but look at other countries driving cars with like 300k miles on them that we traded as "end of their life" at 120k. We're just being wasteful at that point.

Is the expectation that after 15-20 years we just junk the rest of the car? There's cars on the road now that are way older and emissions aren't great but otherwise run fine. The path to sustainability isn't just power type but not having to remanufacture cars over and over and try to make the existing ones upgradeable. Cars take a lot of resources to make that also has impact. Especially since the body usually holds up it's the engine that wears out on ICE. Can't imagine ICE beating out pure electric.

Reply to comment by diiejso in 2 men to go on trial for selling dog meat to taco shops by jimmierocket
Serious answer is if they are lying about the meat they sold, likely did not put them out in a humane manner. They probsbly had atrocious conditions while holding the dogs for slaughter too. I'd say the same can apply to cows, but this is Mexico and I am not even that familiar with our own laws here let alone another country. The dogs might have belonged to other people. Probably also trying to stack charges on top of lying about dog meat.

Reply to Google to merge mapping service Waze with maps products teams | CNN Business by sovamind
So borderline a monopoly then. When I had a Windows phone (I know...) I used Bing maps out of stubbornness to be zero Google and it worked fine enough. I still use them and aside from looking at reviews (which are Yelp) it is otherwise accurate. But when Windows phone went away I moved back to Android. No Bing maps. Tried to hack web version to work and it had weird issues too. Tried openstreetmaps and it was crazy lacking. Only two map apps on Android that seem to work are Google and Waze and I like neither. I just deal with Google's shit UI and collecting my data out of lack of options, with Waze merging there is really not an alternative. Google really wants your location data. On top of that, now maps keeps bitching how it can't figure out where I am and wants me to TAKE PICTURES of my surroundings, like no fucking thank you, previous phones tracked perfectly what did they do that fucked up GPS so bad?
