that fitting was literally just a hole! I poked an allen wrench through it and it just hit the cabinet. We solved the issue- see edit above

not that I can see and I even ran my fingers all around in the cabinet above to see if I can feel any imperfections.

yes I'm sure that there's a bracket attaching it to the wall behind. the piece that I'm missing is that it must be also attached above or from the sides in order to keep the front side up
