All the right advice given here already--learn to skate classes at laurel have been great for my kid, but it's a bit of a hike up there.
I play hockey and have skated basically my whole life. The biggest thing is ice time and coaching can help speed up that learning curve, but like most things, practice, practice, practice!
If it suits your learning style, definitely check out some beginner skating youtube tutorials, might help you understand what you're trying to do before you even get out there.
