I got a tip from a HR person when applying for a Internship. (That I didn't get)
Works well with what everyone here says about working on your application.
"You only need to be first in line for one job, doesn't matter how many second places you get. Do a few reaaally good applications to things you would fit as, rather than a lot of applications half-assed"
Worked as a charm for one of my next 3 applications.
