Though you asked about a monthly pass specifically, my 2 cents on MetroCard. If you are not commuting to and from NYC everyday then you can just get a metro card and use it for both the path and subway. During the pandemic I had to go to the city twice a week and I used to refill the subway card rather than getting an unlimited pass for the path and subway.
