Idk about on city streets, but rumble strips have saved my life several times on the highway. I had a long commute for a while a few years ago and would regularly struggle with staying awake. A few times I drifted off and was alerted by those strips.

You could always volunteer. There are a couple of conservation oriented groups here where you could help in planting natives trees, removing invasives, testing the water quality of the river, or otherwise restoring habitat

They’re invasive and I agree…, but only if there are concrete plans to replace them with something native.
