I stopped in that area to visit a feed store and was spooked away by the confederate flags on the trucks in the parking lot.

I hate this so much. My most traumatic events have come from roommates. It's not enough that my income is low, it keeps me in emotional danger by having to live with people.

Out in Spokane it's mostly mushrooms in the spring or autumn. There are wild alliums, too. Look specifically at Spokane foraging and see if you can find a mycelium hunters group on Facebook or something.
You'll have to get out of the city to do some good foraging as Spokane itself is kind of gross. Try out north near Green Bluff or west in Cheney. You can find a lot of resources on indigenous gathering in the area for some inspiration.
