I had my trip scheduled for the week of December 12th when the protests started, but moved it for the week after and it was perfect. I was following the news closely and because Cusco relies so heavily on tourism, locals even agreed to cease protests until January 3rd.
So we had a perfect trip, nothing happened in town, and also due to so many tourists canceling their trips, Machu Picchu had low attendance which allowed us to take great photos and spend more time up in the citadel.

It's a long day and several steps to get there between planes, trains and buses, but definitely worth the time and effort.
