People buy them for the same reason they buy 200mph supercars, because they want them and can afford them. None of my business. If a sedan or minivan bores the fuck out of somebody, why can't they enjoy the illusion of being a rugged outdoorsman while driving to work?

First, can't take this too seriously, second, it takes an amazing person to turn lack of style into "most stylish".

These routes tend to be enacted after one-off severe storms, then forgotten. As another said, they're more likely to have stringent parking regulations than to be passable during a storm. Also, the first road to have abandoned vehicles towed away after the fact.

Maybe 800 in scrap value. I'm sure they're near the mark on replacement value, though. This is the shitty thing about scrapper thieves, a painted steel rail will probably be installed as a replacement, the brass one probably was in place over 100 years and is gone forever.

The only worry is how much have the vehicle systems deteriorated over an extra 7 months. Any repairs will come in a lump sum rather than two more manageable intervals. The inspection station doesn't enforce expiration, or any other aspect of inspection, just pass/fail and apply sticker.

Yes. Police and firefighters definitely are given sick time in every case I'm aware of.

I agree, but don't see why they should be required to work if legitimately sick, under threat of firing? Like I said, I'm not aware of any of the intricacies involved with this issue. Are they afraid of wildcat sick out strikes or what?

So it is quite convoluted? Though I understand a need for reliable employees in an industry of this type, there should also be safety concerns involving sick people at posts involvingpublicsafety, aside from employee welfare. Seems the special rules developed over the years for this industry did not help it's employees.

Reply to DMV ? What do I need to take to have my motorcycle endorsement placed on my license? by [deleted]
Regular license and yellow card should be all you need. You'll have to surrender the old license to get a new one, and there is a fee, I believe. The mechanism in place is to carry the endorsement card with the license until renewal. Not positive they'll even issue a new one for the reason you state, usually you would be replacing a damaged or lost/stolen one before expiration.

While not surprised about Toomey, I'm unsure of the inner workings of this issue. Are these workers allowed a large number of vacation or personal days that must be used if they call off sick? Seems unusual that rail work has a reputation as good employment, yet no sick time? Why would they fire experienced workers for being sick when they're begging for new hires? Why does this contract affect six different unions? Seems more complex than the headlines and articles, though I hit a paywall on this one.

And who else? Donors, then voters, get the policy attention, with little left for anyone else. Can't see why boomers would push college tuition up when they were paying for their own kids to go, though.

Seems to me those in charge would have been well over 50, as they are today. Possibly tuition went up because of less demand on overbuilt infrastructure?

Er, most boomers benefitted from living wage jobs that didn't require a degree, and didn't get one. Just because you hate your parents doesn't mean they are at fault.
