That doesn't match what OP is looking for so it sounds like you answered your belief more than what they asked. They want to enjoy short simple games with family and friends so not a PC, nor the single player deep story driven PS5 exclusives. I think series S makes a lot of sense for just fun multiplayer games, not playing too often or heavily and not wanting the top performance. But if you want the disc drive you need Series X or PS5.
The best way to decide is by looking at the games each one offers. The current gen top consoles are honestly overkill for basic Nintendo-like games but if money isn't an object go for it.

I've always preferred physical because I grew up before digital copies existed. I usually bought games used and loved browsing all the boxes at the store. I didn't always have a solid internet connection or had limited gigs. Now a disc seems pointless because of the updates and I think they are way too big of files to fit on the disc anyways!

Reply to it seems like mid generation upgrades are in development for the series x/s and ps5. what would you like to see added? and would you buy it? by NATE24OB
The only thing I want for Series X is for Microsoft to steal the tech for haptic feedback controllers. The Xbox controller is comfortable and battery lasts longer but why not admit the PS5 controller is great and add similar features? It would make it feel new age and if both consoles have it developers will be motivated to use the feature.
I want more games for Xbox lol. I don't think they've even begun to use the full capabilities of the hardware yet and it's whisper quiet and cool so I don't see the need for a redesign. It's sorta big but nothing compared to the PS5; I wouldn't buy a new one just bc it's a little smaller or looks cool, that's not reason enough.

My quick search pulled up probably a hundred Xbox vs PS5 questions. If you've read all of those and all the comments then nothing is going to help you decide 😂

Your situation isn't much different than most other folks, use the search bar and read about it.

Yes a kid doesn't, that's probably why it's okay. If you as a grown ass adult received an open used gift for your birthday you'd be like wtf....?

Yeah if you were just sending it along out of the goodness of your heart because they want one that would be awfully kind and generous! But you're getting yourself a newer better console and calling it a gift giving the old one away lol 🤷🏻♂️ I'll take my downvotes but it's a bit tacky when it's really all about you haha.

It's definitely not getting obsolete any time soon. This generation has had such a slow start due to supply chain and chip issues. Look at the Harry Potter game, it's still releasing on the last gen! So maybe Sony will introduce their new console in the next year, but it's not because the PS5 is old or weak.

The original Modern Warfare 2. I dumped so many hours into that game I don't want to know how much of my life was spent playing it.

This generation is only starting, think about games from early PS4 vs nowadays. I think they haven't even begun using the power of these systems bc most games are still coming out on last gen. I bought the Xbox Series X bc of the studios Microsoft bought and what they produce. Arkane studios doing games like Redfall, Bethesda making Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 eventually, Tango Gameworks, and more.
The Series X hasn't been worth it yet but I will be keeping it for years to come. So in 5 years, 10 years whatever it will have a ton of games I'm still trying to catch up on or play again. We are just in this awkward between phase bc of the pandemic delaying games and chip shortages preventing people from getting their hands on the systems. In a year or 2 when all the games are exclusively current gen your PS4 won't cut it.

Just as a rebuttal as an Xbox owner that spent forever debating these things before choosing. Yes PS plus has more games but they also have a quantity over quality approach. Who cares how many games a service has if you wouldn't want to play the vast majority? Game pass gets you day one access to upcoming titles. And to get all the backwards compatible PS games you have to pay for the higher tiers which isn't cheaper than game pass. Game pass doesn't have tiers you just get all or none, simpler but not good if you just want a basic option.
PS obviously has better exclusive right now, but I got Xbox bc I'm a fan of Bethesda and the studios and games that are coming out. We just got Hifi rush, Redfall is coming from Arkane in May, Starfield is coming. I'm expecting to be playing this generation for 5+ years and considering almost all games and studios got delayed and messed up by Covid, these consoles weren't even stocked due to chip shortages and they are still making games for last gen, this generation is just starting! I think things will swing back towards Microsoft's favor with the acquisitions in the long run.
It all comes down to what games you want to play. I have a PS4 because it was unquestionably better than the Xbox one so it gives the best of both worlds having both ecosystems.

Which console has the games you want to play or the people you want to play with? Simple as that.

I would wait a while. If there aren't any PS5 exclusives you're dying to play rn then there's no need to buy it. Eventually later on if you absolutely want it, the new slim or pro or whatever might be out or you can buy a used one or digital.

It's definitely not a flop nor is it barely an upgrade. Idk what you're reading and who you're listening to. Games run smoother, faster, look better, are more immersive, and this generation only just began. Look at all the best PS4 games, most came out many years after the system was released.
PS5 has sold over 30 million units and Xbox has sold over 20 million so tons of people have switched, it's actually about on par with the last gen despite all the global problems. You can't ignore the fact that this gen came out during a pandemic, supply chain and chip shortage and judging this generation right now is ridiculous.
And if you believe this gen isn't any better than why do you care how much it costs, you don't need to upgrade 😂

I don't know why you're prejudging Redfall, I love Arkane games and they've been successful in the past. And Starfield literally has a release date... There's new games coming out like Minecraft legends, hi Fi rush, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty, High on Life, games that came from PS5 like Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, and of course cross platform games like Hogwarts Legacy. Plus all the sports games, racing games, shooters, multiplayer games.
Everybody has been disappointed with Xbox this generation, it's been talked about ad nauseum; but Xbox is in a good place to have a big year. It sounds like you made a rash decision at the store without doing your research, but if you be patient they've had a few good games already out this year and more have release dates.
If you want the PS5 exclusives then buy a PS5 lol.
