Reading glasses are the magnifying over the counter ones. No prescription needed. Someone else's were lying around my place so I tried them on a whim, and I didn't realize how big of a difference they can make!

Buy cheap reading glasses, they're available all over the place. I need them towards the end of the day or after I've spent too much time reading or playing a game on my phone.
I get what you're saying, but it's kind of book dependent. You're already not contributing to the author by reading a book secondhand, but what's the author's view on that? If it's a Cory Doctorow book, sure, I'd do it, he'd encourage it. Or check it out from a library. Other than that sort of a scenario, it's hard to support, but I can see what you're getting at. I'm not really going to say one way or the other.

That's what I was thinking, too. I worked at a place that did that - you got double time for working a Holiday, and could also use your Holiday PTO for that day, or just bank it in with your regular PTO.

I'd put a cover over it. Maybe a platform with a hinged lid. Cheap, easy, functional.

Moleskin tape would probably work better. Or the felt pads you attach to the bottom of chair legs.
