I definitely get what you're saying.
I think a lot of the hype was related to Valve, and the game's worldbuilding. I personally find the lore more interesting than the game itself.

I think that's fair. They try to innovate but it doesn't always work out.

It's definitely a fine game but fans of it treat it as the best game that ever existed.
They also hate the sequel and sent death threats to women associated with it 🤡
