LPT: Lots of kids are encouraged to dream big. Don't let this become a shackle in adult life, feeling you never fulfilled your "potential." Those dreams were a way to energize you to learn, practice, and focus. They are rarely realistic and don't take into account the complexities of real life.

LPT: Don't get married just because you are afraid to die alone and want someone to take care of you when you're old. This only works if you die ahead of your spouse or your kids can put their own lives on hold to become eldercare for you.

LPT: If you feel you are getting "mixed signals" from someone (in a personal or professional situation), ask yourself: is this person just trying to tell me something negative/critical but wrapping it in a polite package?

LPT: Think people are offended because you are "too honest?" The problem is likely you being rude and tactless. It's not hard to be considerate while being direct and truthful. Bonus: Think you're getting "mixed signals" a lot? It's likely someone politely daying something you don't want to hear.

LPT: There are three elements to success in life, professionally and even socially: aptitude, formal education and/or connections, and energy/focus. Two out of the three are usually sufficient, but having only one rarely is.

LPT: You don't realize it until you're on your own, but for many people, your parents are basically your personal assistants. Learn to get better at these tasks before you're completely out on your own and "adulting" won't be so hard or such a shock. (Details in comments.)

LPT: College professors often don't mention borderline or small cases of academic integrity violations, but they do note students who do this and may deal harshly with bigger violations that require official handling. I.e., don't assume your professors are idiots because they don't bust you.
